This urn is made from Maple wood, an American favorite. Best known for syrup and displays of red, orange and yellow each fall, Maples grow throughout the Eastern and Central United States. Trees can reach 130 feet tall and the wood color varies from creamy white to grey to reddish-brown depending on the species. This piece includes Burl wood, an explosion of cellular growth, which yields highly figured and unique patterning prized for its beauty and rarity.

This silver maple burl came from a residential backyard in east Atlanta. The tree posed a danger to the house it shaded for so many years and had to come down. The base measured over 60” in diameter and over half the surface was covered in burls. Word about the tree spread with today’s modern media, and by mid afternoon wood turners from across the southeast had converged to watch the arborists surgically bring it down. Old friendships were rekindled as a symphony of chainsaws pieced up the treasured burl. The wood of this mighty maple shined with sporadic character, but the reunion it created gushed with memories of old.
