Persimmon is a heavy, hard, and strong wood. Persimmon is the only American ebony, and is sometimes referred to as “white ebony.”
Persimmon was used for making the highest-quality heads of golf clubs known as “woods”. It is now popular in the making of traditional longbows, and used in making a small number of wooden flutes and eating utensils such as wooden spoons and cornbread knives (wooden knives that may cut through the bread without scarring the dish).
Persimmon trees are known much more commonly for their fruit, and not their wood. The fruit, twigs and leaves from Persimmon trees were used by Native Americans and early settlers for medicines. Persimmon was also used to make bread, syrups, liquor, other beverages and puddings that are still popular today. During the Civil War, Confederate soldiers boiled persimmon seeds to create a coffee substitute. Persimmon fruit can be eaten fresh or dried. Persimmon’s family name Diospyros, in fact, translates to “fruit of Zeus.”
